World Environment Day marked

JUNE 4, KATHMANDU.  The Ministry of Urban Development and the Solid Waste Management Technical Support Centre marked the World Environment Day by organizing various programmes here Monday.
On the occasion, Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City has been honoured as the ´Cleanest City-2070.´
Similarly, five students, the winners of the school-level essay competition, have been awarded. Likewise, pubic awareness oriented drama and skit were also performed on the occasion.
Presenting the award, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development, Chhabiraj Panta, emphasised that the rest of the municipalities needed to follow the path of Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City.
Executive Officer of Pokhara Sub-Metropolis, Jhalakram Adhikari, said that efforts are underway to make Pokhara a clean city by declaring it black polythene bag prohibited area and vendor shop prohibited area.
Similarly, Executive Officer of the Centre, Dr. Sumitra Amatya, stressed that all communities should be mobilized in protecting the environment as it was impossible to do so without the support of the community.
The World Environment Day under the slogan ´Think, Eat, Save´ is going to be celebrated on June 5 by organizing various programmes.
Meanwhile, locals of Jorpati VDC and army personnel cleaned a two kilometers stretch of the Bagmati River from Gokarna to Jorpati Narayantar this morning on the occasion of the World Environment Day.
The river was cleaned under the initiatives of Malbari Locality Improvement Committee, Hariyali Street Improvement Committee and army personnel of the Bhairab Prasad Battalion, Gokarna.
As many as 70 people had participated in Bagmati River Cleaning Programme.RSS
