The eastern development region lies in the eastern part of Nepal. It is bordered with India to the south and east, China to the north and central development region to the west. Eastern development region consist of three zones and 16 districts. It has an area of 28456 Sq Km. Fourteen municipality are created in this development region.
Eastern development region has the Himalayas in the north, hills in the middle and Terai in the south. Terai extends from Mechi River in the east to Kamala River in the west. It is made up of alluvial soil.

This fertile land is important because a variety of crops are grown here. To the west of Koshi river, in between Mahabharat and Curia, there elongates a valley called; Inner Terai. Some parts of this region are favorable for agriculture but some other parts are not. Himalayan region in the north consist of many mountain ranges. Mahalangur, Kumbhakarna, Umabekh, Labasumba and Janak are some of them.

The highest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest which is 8848 meter high and third highest mountain Kanchanjangha is 8598 meter high lies in this region. Other high peaks in the region are Makalu which is 8463 meter, Lhotse 8516 meter and Choyu is 8201 meter high. Kanchanjangha conservation area, Koshi Tappu wild life reserve, Makalubarun conservation area Makaubarun national park and Sagarmatha national park are located here. The Koshi River flows through the region with its seven tributaries.

The lofty alpine grassland lies to the south of Tundra, vegetation region. Coniferous evergreen forest of pine, fire, spruce, etc. is found in the low parts of the Himalayan region and high parts of Mahabharat. Oak, birch, beach, popular trees from deciduous monsoon forests in the middle hill. Terai, Bhabar and Churia Range have tall, hard and almost straight tropical evergreen woods of Sal, Sisau, hair, Cane etc. But massive deforestation is causing a devastating effect in its ecosystem.
